Money-making in Cataclysm

I missed out on a lot of opportunity with 3.3.3. I knew there were a lot of things I could have invested in to flip when 3.3.3 when live, and I just didn't do it. So, to make sure I don't the Cataclysmic (har har) opportunity, I'm going to start putting my ideas in here so you can profit off of them if I forget to.

BIG TIP: Sell your mats in a variety of stack sizes. This means singles, fives, tens and full stacks. Sometimes, people just want a few to make something or to finish off a powerlvling bracket. Often, those people will pay more per mat if they can buy 5 rather than 20. And now on to the small-but-consistent ticket items:

Netherweave Cloth and Netherweave Bags

In Wrath, Neth Bags had a large profit for a solid month or two after Wrath was released. I could have made more off of this if I sold more bags. Most of the time, I couldn't keep the AH stocked. Next time, I intend to have significantly more bags. If bag prices are similar to Wrath (hoping they will be more), then they will sell for 8-12g each. I generally don't buy neth cloth unless it's less than 3g. So for every 100 bags sold, that's 500-900 gold profit. I was easily selling 10 bags a day. I think I can up that to 20 or 30. So I'll stockpile bags and neth cloth. I'll sell cloth if the supply is low and demand is high.

Profession Leveling Mats

These are generally the mats that will help powerlevel through a sticky point with any profession. You don't need to put all your eggs in one basket. Spread your investments over the whole area.

Sell Mageweave Cloth, Runecloth and Netherweave Cloth. It takes a LOT of cloth to powerlvl Tailoring.

Sell Ores rather than Bars. Occasionally, bars sell for more, but it is rare. JC's need ores to Prospect gems and Miners can smelt ores to powerlvl mining. Here are ores that you should buy if the prices are low or save up if you're a gatherer: silver, gold, iron, mithril, thorium, truesilver, fel iron, adamantite.

SELL ALL OF YOUR HERBS TO ME. I'll buy them ALL, since I'll be powerlvling Alchemy with NO Herbalist. I'll be relying on the guild and the AH to feed my profession. So I'll pay very well.

Sell Nether Essence, Dream Dust, Eternal Essence, Illusion Dust, Planar Essence, and Arcane Dust. Sell your lesser essences in singles and fives. Sell your greater essences in singles. make sure you convert some of your greaters to lessers so you are always posting both types. Sell your dusts in stacks as outlined above.

Sell Thick Leather, Rugged Leather, Knothide Leather and Thick Clefthoof Leather (but do not necessarily invest in Thick Clefthoof, just wait to sell it).

Sell most cooking recipes you come across in towns as you are lvling. They usually sell for 15-35g. People powerlvling cooking are more likely to use recipes and cooking mats that are on the AH, rather than running around the world. This is why it's best to put your recipe up along with the cooking mats that go with it. It will encourage the purchase of the recipe if the person knows they will actually get to use it right away. Specifically, sell Bear Flanks (from Felwood bears), the Charred Bear Kabob recipe and the Juicy Bear Burger recipe (both sold in Felwood). Sell Darkclaw Lobsters (fished in Azshara) and the Lobster Stew recipe (sold in Feralas). That can be a very sticky point in lvling Cooking.

Note: to make selling stacks easier, use the Appraiser tab in Auctioneer. That way, you can set stack size, stack quantity, and price each and just click a button. Selling 10 stacks of 2 just became 1 click instead of ten. Congratulations.

I did a little experiment with enchant mats last week where I bought out all the soul and dream dust available and became an evil monopolist. I had mixed success. I guess over the course of the week I probably turned a modest profit, but it was an exhausting effort. It required an awful lot of AH camping. In the end I judged it not entirely worth it. Back to crafting eternal belt buckles.

However, I do feel strongly that enchanting mats is a good place to play around with general AH strategies because there are no listing deposits.

With the enchanting mats, you just have to be vigilant, but it's okay since there is no deposit. You just need to have your stuff listed when someone is powerlvling, and then your stock will sell out.

That and your belt buckles do, however, transition well into the next part I only barely touched on (with neth bags). Crafting for profit. This part is much harder to write specific tips on, since demand can and does change often. But there are some things that should always make money, depending on the supply in the AH. And, seriously, before you make a handful of something, check the AH. If the prices are too low .. maybe skip that item until the prices are where you want them to be.

BLACKSMITHING

Aaron mentioned Eternal Belt Buckles. If you have a BS, this is one of your money-makers. They will ALWAYS be needed, as they are the only way we can add sockets to our gear unless we are blacksmiths. EVERYONE near or at end game will need 1 buckle for each spec, and will need a new buckle every time that waist slot item gets upgraded.

ENCHANTING

Scrolls of Enchant [Insert Gear Type Here]. There are a lot of options, but these will pay off better than anything you can advertise in Trade chat. All you need is the ability to do the enchant, and the appropriate vellum (from the AH or an Inscriptionist/Scribe) Your mission is to find out which scrolls sell the best and profit off of those. Here are some recommendations (some from wowconfidential and some from me):

Weapon-Mongoose - an end-game BC enc from Kara, but sells crazy well because it is fairly rare now

Weapon-Berserking - dps enc that is pretty standard

Weapon-Exceptional Spellpower and Weapon-Mighty Spellpower - fresh 80 or lvling casters will go for the first, end-gamers will need the second

Chest-Super Stats and Chest-Powerful Stats
- the first is cheap enough that people can get it when starting heroics or while lvling, and the second is pretty much the pick of the litter for chest enchants

Boots-Tuskarr's Vitality and Boots-Icewalker - the most popular boot encs -- the first is movement and stamina, the second is hit and crit

If you need end-game enchanting mats for leveling the skill or you just want to sell enchanting mats because the AH supply is pretty low, here are some things you can craft that DE well (from wowconfidential):

Tailoring:

Duskweave Belt – Requires ~1.5 stacks of frostweave and produces 3.5 infinite dust.

Frostwoven Belt – Requires ~0.75 stacks of frostweave and produces 2 infinite dust.

Jewelcrafting:

Bloodstone Band and other such jewellery – Require 2 crystallized earth and a gem and produce 2.5 infinite dusts.

Jade Dagger Pendant – An eternal earth and some gems produces a dream shard.

Leatherworking:

Frostscale or Nerubian Legguards – Require half a stack of borean leather to produce 2 infinite dusts.

Blacksmithing:

Horned Cobalt Helm – Requires half a stack of cobalt bars and produces 6 infinite dust.

Notched Cobalt War Axe – Requires half a stack of cobalt bars and produces 1.5 greater cosmic essences.

Deadly Saronite Dirk – Requires 7 bars and 2 crystallized airs to produce a dream shard.

Inscription:

Faces of Doom – Requires various inks and a frozen orb (these are really cheap these days) and produces an abyss crystal.

tangy clam meat, raptor flesh, and giant eggs also sell fairly well for cooking mats. I'd be interested to see if you can turn a profit on mystery meat, since not many people know you can buy it from a vendor in howling fjord.

I wonder about the mystery meat, too. Probably can make money off of it if you make sure the carrion surprise recipe (found in Desolace, SoS and DWM) is always up at the same time.

OK, so I can totally second the Bloodstone Band thing. There's 4 similar items JCs can make for dirt cheap that can be used for fun and profit:
  • Bloodstone Band
  • Sun Rock Ring
  • Crystal Chalcedony Amulet
  • Crystal Citrine Necklace
You can purchase the mats for these things outright (use the snatch feature in Auctioneer), or prospect a bunch of saronite ore for the gems and buy a couple eternal earths, or whatever. I've been consistently able to get the mats for about 1.5-1.8g per item. They DE into infinite dust (with the occasional cosmic essence thrown in), or vendor for 3.14g. Frankly, I've just vendored most of them. Last week I processed some 350-400 items while leveling JC, and these four items took me from 350 to 420, all while grossing about 1100g (probably 500g profit or so). In just over an hour.

Making money while leveling a crafting profession. Can't beat that.

Considering how expensive it is to lvl JC from 335 to 350 (pretty much only able to lvl off of adamantite ore), I will welcome this.

Edit: Just added it up. Each Adamantite Ore was about 2.5g and each Primal Earth was going for 4g. Each skillpoint attempt requires 21 adamantite ore and 1 primal earth. So 335-350 was a minimum of 56.5g per lvl, which is over 847g in mats for 15 skillpoints, but I know at 345 the recipe went yellow, so it could end up being more. I only got to 347 before the AH and I ran out of mats.

The sucky thing is these don't sell. The best I can do is DE and hope the mats get me SOMEthing back, but at 2.5 arcane dust per DE ... very doubtful I'll make much back.

Very ouch.
